Everything You Need to Know Before Booking a Live Calligrapher or Hand Engraver in Toronto
Planning a wedding, corporate event, luxury retail activation, or private celebration? Choosing the right personalization method is one of the best ways to create an unforgettable guest experience.
At Calligrafea by Karen, I specialize in live calligraphy, hand engraving, and hot foiling for events across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Here's everything you need to know before booki
What Is Hand Engraving?
Hand engraving is the art of permanently carving designs onto glass, metal, plastic, leather, wood, and other compatible materials—without using a laser.
Using a portable micro-motor engraving tool, I carefully engrave each item freehand with:
Guest names
Initials and monograms
Elegant calligraphy
Custom illustrations
Logos and branding
Because my equipment is fully portable, I provide both in-studio engraving and live on-site engraving for weddings, corporate events, luxury retail activations, PR events, and brand experiences throughout Toronto and the GTA.
For an elevated finish, engravings can be enhanced with metallic wax in gold, silver, or copper. These finishes are ideal for decorative keepsakes but may gradually fade with frequent washing.
What Items Can Be Personalized?
Many products can be customized through hand engraving, including:
Perfume bottles
Wine and liquor bottles
Glassware and drinkware
Cosmetic and skincare packaging
Candles
Compact mirrors
Luggage tags
Leather accessories
Metal keepsakes
Wooden gifts
Plastic products
Every material engraves differently, so selecting the right personalization method is essential.
Should I Provide a Sample Item?
Yes! Whenever possible, I recommend providing a sample before your event.
Testing allows me to:
Confirm the material is suitable
Determine the best personalization method
Ensure durability
Prevent damage
Deliver the highest-quality results during your event
This is especially important for luxury brand activations and corporate gifting, where consistency is essential.
What Items Can't Be Engraved?
Not every product is safe to engrave.
For safety reasons, I do not engrave carbonated beverage bottles, including:
Champagne bottles
Sparkling wine bottles
Other pressurized glass bottles
The internal pressure inside these bottles increases the risk of breakage during engraving.
If you're unsure whether your product is suitable, simply send me a photo before your event, and I'll be happy to advise

Choosing the right product is just as important as choosing the personalization method.
Ask yourself:
Will guests actually use it?
Does it represent your brand or event?
Is there enough space for personalization?
Is the material suitable?
Will it become a memorable keepsake?
The best event gifts are both beautiful and practical—items your guests will continue to enjoy long after your event has ended.
