Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is hand engraving and how does it work?
Hand engraving is the art of carving designs onto solid surfaces — most commonly glass, metal, plastics etc. — entirely by hand, without the use of lasers.
When I receive your custom message, monogram, or illustration, I first draft the design to ensure it complements the shape, colors, and existing details (such as labels) of the item. From there, I use a hand-held micro motor drill to carefully engrave the calligraphy or illustration freehand.
Because this tool is portable and doesn’t require an outlet, I can engrave in my Toronto studio or perform live engraving at events and brand activations.
Once the engraving is complete, you can choose to enhance it with metallic wax finishes in Antique Gold, Grecian Gold, Autumn Gold, Spanish Copper, or Silver Leaf. Please note: metallic waxes are best for display pieces, not frequently used glassware, since repeated washing can wear them down.
-
Are there surfaces that can’t be engraved?
Yes. Carbonated bottles (like champagne or sparkling wine) should be avoided. Engraving can weaken and creates pressure from inside of the the structure, creating a risk of breakage or explosion. If you’re unsure, simply ask — I’ll confirm whether your item is safe to engrave.
Here are some options and alternative. For event customization, I offer a variety of calligraphy options: written/painted calligraphy, hot foiling, and engraving.
Written/Painted Calligraphy – ideal for paper, acrylic ornaments, champagne bottles, plastics, and leather.
Hot Foiling Calligraphy – available for paper packaging, ribbons, vegan leather, and select types of leather.
Engraving Calligraphy – perfect for spirit and liquor bottles, drinkware, glassware, cosmetic items, plastics, and even wood.
To ensure the best results, I encourage clients and event coordinators to provide sample products whenever possible. This helps us confirm that the chosen method is the most durable and delivers a truly luxurious experience for your guests/clients.
-
Is engraving permanent?
Yes definitely! Hand engraving is permanent. The design is carved directly into the surface and will not fade over time. For glassware that will be used and washed frequently, I recommend skipping metallic wax finishes to ensure lasting results.
